Project Status The 200-Village Project is now being implemented in ten (10) countries, though at different stages, and has already covered 5,640 households in 188 villages. These consist of 74 upland villages, 73 in the lowland and 23 in coastal areas. The remaining 18 villages are upland-lowland-coastal combinations. During the implementation about 125 local NGOs and People's organizations were involved particularly in the household survey and community profiling activities in all the countries covered.
The countries include Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Selected local NGO networks, namely ADAB, CNAC, AVARD, BINA SWADAYA, ERA-Consumers, RDF, PhilDHRRA, NNGOC, RRAFA and VACVINA act as Country Focal Points (CFPs), respectively. Japan was included in the initial process but since the household survey is not culturally appropriate in their villages, a case study based on the same framework will be prepared for comparative assessment in the future. Furthermore, there has been a continuous effort to explore the conduct of the Project in Nepal and Laos. Major in-country activities conducted for the Project include national meetings and workshops on Project concept design and methodology, the household survey, community profiling and village meetings. At the regional level, several meetings were held by the Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Project Advisory Committee (PAC) on the details of the Project design, methodology and management. The first regional meeting was held in December 1998 in Bangkok mainly to consult and orient the CFPs on the Project, to enhance their capability for its implementation and to develop an efficient information exchange mechanism among partners. Also, a Database System was developed to facilitate data processing and analysis. Training in database operation and use was held last 04 & 05 October 1999 in Tagaytay City, Philippines. The Regional Conference is organized as a culmination of the first phase. The event will consist of the presentation of the national reports and a regional paper, discussion of Project issues and opportunities, action planning for the next phase of the Project and discussion of the plan for the WFS-FYL (World Food Summit-Five Years Later). |
